In his remarks, Hon. Afenyo-Markin expressed deep appreciation to his colleagues for the gesture, reflecting on the personal and professional journey that brought him to his current role. He shared a poignant anecdote about how his initial nomination to the ECOWAS Parliament was rejected due to Ghana exceeding its delegation quota.
Disheartened, he had left with no intention of returning. However, his name was later reinstated—a turn of events he credited to divine providence.
The Deputy Speaker fondly recalled a similar celebration on his 42nd birthday at the ECOWAS Parliament and humorously remarked that his colleagues had once again “conspired” to mark the occasion in Abuja, despite his original low-key plans.
