CJ’s Suspension Not Legal, It’s Pure Politics- John Darko

The Member of Parliament for Suame and Counsel for the Minority caucus has alleged that the recent suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo by President John Dramani Mahama is politically motivated.

His remarks were made on Monday, May 5, after a protest was organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and other political parties against the Chief Justice’s suspension.

The MP argued that the decision was not rooted in legal justification but driven by partisan interests.

“This has nothing to do with legal proceedings, looking at whether a Chief Justice has committed some grievous offence. This is politics at play,” he stated.

He further claimed that the action by President Mahama aligns with the political agenda of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), citing previous statements by its leaders.

“This is somebody [Mahama] who said he’s coming to reset the judiciary. The chairman of the NDC, [Johnson Asiedu Nketia] had said the Chief Justice must be removed. And that will follow with the removal of the top members of the EC.

“The political party that has formed the government made these claims. Let’s not play the ostrich and pretend that this is just a legal process in motion. This is politics in motion. This is the President acting to the base of his party. This is a president acting under the instruction of the extreme part of his party; this is pure politics, simple.”
