The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) loss in the 2024 Ghanaian general election has been attributed to an unexpected factor, the election’s scheduling on a Saturday.
Speaking on Wontumi TV, the Presidential candidate of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) in the 2020 general election, Mr. Kofi Percival Akpalu emphasized that the NPP’s strongholds in the Ashanti Region were disproportionately affected by the Saturday election date.
“Most of the communities in the Ashanti Region are Saturday worshippers, many of your supporters were unable to cast their ballots on election day due to their religious obligations.”
Akpalu cited historical precedent to support his claim, he referenced the 1996 general election, in which NPP candidate John Agyekum Kufuor as he then was, lost to former President Jerry John Rawlings. Notably, that election was also held on a Saturday.
“I am not saying that this is the sole reason for your defeat, but it is a significant factor that you cannot ignore, add it to your report and make sure even future generation will not come and repeat same mistake and you must learn from this and ensure that you do not repeat them in the future.”
Mr Akpalu said “They don’t even sell, an exercise that will bring money home, this people will not do, how much more going out to vote for something he doesn’t benefit from directly
