The Minority in Parliament are calling for a review of the 24- hour markert programme by the government saying such a programme should be meet the needs and wants of communities and the country as whole first before its implementation.
Speaking at a press conference, on Monday September 14, 2026, Member of Parliament (MP) for Bantama, Francis Asenso-Boakye called on the government to reassess the programme’s design saying the rollout should not be based on a uniform approach that fails to take into account the priorities of the communities.
He argued that a consultation with local authorities and other relevant stakeholders was needed before the project commenced as constructing new markets in communities which do not need them amounts to a waste of resources.
“We in the Minority on behalf of the good people of Ghana call on the government to have a look at the 24-Hour Market programme design and deepen consultation by undertaking an immediate, comprehensive and nonpartisan review,” he said.
The MP said the programme should go through a phase of redesign, one that will meet the demands and needs of communities.
“The programme should be redesigned to be needs-based and demand-driven and implemented only where a genuine need has been established.”
He further argued that the plans for development must guide the project’s selection insisting existing markets in areas that meets demand should be rehabilitated.
“Development plans must guide the selection of the project and existing markets should be rehabilitated where necessary and markets already under construction should be completed rather than abandoned,” he added.
