A member of the Ashanti Regional Communications Team of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Richard Agyemang, has described former Vice President and current NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, as a competent leader capable of governing Ghana.
According to Mr. Agyemang, Dr. Bawumia understands why the NPP lost power to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2024 general elections and believes the party has the capacity to return to power.
Speaking on the Wontumi Morning Show with host Oheneba Nana Asiedu, Mr. Agyemang also urged the Chief Justice, His Lordship Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonney, to stay out of partisan politics and focus on protecting the independence and integrity of Ghana’s Judiciary.
“Ghana has had many Chief Justices, and we all saw how they handled the Judiciary with care. The Chief Justice should understand that the Judiciary is in his hands. As Chief Justice, he should not focus on politics because doing so could put the Judiciary at risk”.
Mr. Agyemang further appealed to lawyers and other professionals around the Chief Justice to advise him on the need to maintain the confidence and trust of the Ghanaian public in the Judiciary.
“The lawyers around him should advise him. If things continue this way, there will come a time when people will lose trust in the judicial system and may no longer feel confident bringing their cases before the courts. If people lose confidence in the courts, they may resort to taking the law into their own hands. This is something that should not be tolerated in Ghana”.
He also compared the current Chief Justice to his predecessor, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, claiming that President John Dramani Mahama previously criticised the former Chief Justice over issues concerning the protection of the Judiciary before her removal from office.
Mr. Agyemang argued that the current situation raises questions about whether the change has produced the desired results.
“If President Mahama removed Justice Torkornoo because he believed she was not protecting the Judiciary, but the current situation is perceived to be worse, then perhaps the President does not know what is best for the people of Ghana. You cannot sell a colour television and use the proceeds to buy a black-and-white television. Ghanaians deserve better”.
Mr. Agyemang also raised concerns over the Chief Justice’s reported international engagements, arguing that Supreme Court justices must be particularly careful about their relationships and interactions with politicians to preserve public confidence in their independence.
He said the Chief Justice must avoid situations that could create the perception that he is politically aligned, stressing that the Judiciary must remain independent and impartial in the eyes of the Ghanaian public.
