Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson has disclosed that full funding for the Accra-Kumasi Expressway will be ready by the end of the year with Government poised not to borrow for the project’s commencement.
The Minister made the announcement in a Facebook post adding this will be the first time a big project like this will have full funds before it’s commencement.
“By the end of this year, the full funding for the transformational Accra-Kumasi Expressway will be ready.
This could be the first time funds for a project of this scale have been fully secured before construction begins,” the Minister said.
“For the avoidance of doubt, not a single pesewa will be borrowed for this project,” he added.
In the 2026 Mid-Year Policy Fiscal Review, Dr Forson revealed that US$1.76 billion dollars had been allocated into an account at the Bank of Ghana for the project’s commencement. He stated the money was ring fenced.
The Ghana Armed Forces(GAF) was tasked to clear the existing Accra-Kumasi route to pave way for the project’s commencement.
His announcement came after the military said it was left with only six kilometres of the route to clear.
“The finish line is in sight. Out of 176 kilometres of challenging terrain, just six kilometres remain. The elite Ghana Armed Forces Engineers have pushed through with absolute grit. The race to Sawua is almost won,” the Armed Forces stated.
The road is a morden six -lane bidirectional class A expressway which is expected to cut Accra–Kumasi travel time roughly in half, reduce transport costs, Improve road safety, reduce congestion and facilitate movement of goods.
