I’m Ready To Do The Heavy Lifting For NPP – Afenyo-Markin

The Minority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, says he will do whatever it takes to defend the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) name, even if it means doing all the hard work himself.

He made the comments on the back of his and the Minority’s recent push for transparency and accountability over the Bank of Ghana and GoldBod losses, which amount to GH¢22 billion.

The Minority Leader, responding to recent attacks from GoldBod CEO Sammy Gyamfi, said he would never be silenced, and that as long as the truth lives, he will do his utmost to stand by it.

He said the power play by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in its bid to escape accountability would not get to him, and that even if he is abused or harassed, he will stand firm.

“If you think today you have the power to abuse me, it’s okay. I won’t go to court, I won’t say anything bad. You can say that you are undermining me, say whatever,” he said.

The leader stated firmly that he is not the first Minority Leader to be subjected to such abuse, noting that others have gone through far worse than he has.

Naming party stalwarts such as former Suame MP Osei Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu, Hon. Afenyo-Markin said being a Minority Leader is a lonely business.

“J.H Mensah went through worse, Kyei-Mensa-Bonsu went through worse. Minority Leader is not an easy office. Sometimes you can be lonely; when everything is going round and round, you have to do the heavy lifting,” he stated.

According to him, he was “ready to do the heavy lifting” because he is not the only one in his family to have suffered for the NPP.

“My stepfather fought for the party, my mum fought for the party, my dad suffered for the party, and it’s my turn. I will fight for the party with a clear mind, and I won’t shake,” he added.

He admonished the NDC to eat humble pie and admit that policy failures indeed led to the GH¢22 billion gold sale losses.
