The Coalition of Unemployed Graduates With Disabilities has said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government under President Akufo-Addo consistently addressed their unemployment concerns, ensuring recruitment slots for them in teaching and other government agencies.
Speaking on Wontumi TV’s morning show with Oheneba Asiedu, the group’s convener, Mr Gilbert Boateng, said they were promised employment by President Mahama during his campaign, but a year later, nothing substantive has happened.
The group picketed at the Jubilee House on August 19 to express their displeasure over the government’s unresponsiveness to their needs.
Responding to a question on why such action was not taken while the NPP was in power, Mr Boateng said the public did not see their demonstrations under the NPP government because their recruitment needs were always prioritised.
On the recruitment of teachers, Mr Boateng said available data suggests most of their members were recruited.
“The past government gave us opportunities. Most of our members were recruited as teachers, and others were posted to the ministries,” he said.
He disclosed that the percentage of persons with disabilities employed in government agencies was low before President Akufo-Addo took office, but that he significantly increased the numbers.
