There is a deepening leadership crisis within the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana which has taken a legal turn, as the High Court in Accra has been asked to halt a planned installation of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena as the successor to the late founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo.
Two senior members of the church, Kweku Agyenim Boateng, a former Deputy General Secretary, and Seth Appiah Richard Brown, last week filed a suit at the High Court in Accra challenging the legitimacy of the succession process.
The plaintiffs argue that amendments made to the church’s constitution in 2024 altered the line of succession, rendering Israel Kwadwo Safo, popularly known as Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, ineligible to assume the leadership.

According to the statement of claim, the plaintiffs contend that the 2024 constitutional amendment represented the “final and deliberate wishes” of Apostle Kwadwo Safo regarding the future leadership of the church.
They are seeking several declarations, including a ruling that the 2017 Constitution of Kristo Asafo Mission and its 2024 amended version remain the supreme governing instruments of the church, and that succession must strictly follow those constitutional provisions .
The lawsuit also seeks an order barring the second defendant, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena from holding himself out as leader of the church and a perpetual injunction restraining the church, its Council of Elders, and other officials from appointing, installing, presenting, or recognising him as leader pending compliance with the church’s constitutional requirements.

The plaintiffs argue that the ongoing succession dispute has generated uncertainty, division, and anxiety among members and threatens the unity and stability of the Kristo Asafo Mission.
A penal notice accompanying the suit warns the defendants and the Council of Elders against proceeding with the installation while the case is before the court, cautioning that any person who disregards the court process could be cited for contempt of court and face penalties prescribed by law, including imprisonment.
The legal action follows the death of Apostle Kwadwo Safo in September 2025, which triggered succession discussions within the church.
It was following this inheritance and family property dispute that things turned bloody on Sunday, with the shooting of Sarah Adwoa Safo, one of her daughters and former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya.
Sarah Adwoa Safo was in a stable condition at a hospital at East Legon in Accra as of 4:20 pm on Sunday, when Graphic Online checked.
Some gunmen, said to be private security operatives, allegedly opened fire on her vehicle at one of the properties of the family, located at Kwabenya in Accra, and said to be the residence of his younger brother, Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena, on Sunday morning (June 21, 2026).

A source within Adwoa Safo’s team pleading anonymity had earlier told Graphic Online around 11:30 am that Adwoa Safo was present in the area when the armed men opened fire, hitting her vehicle and grazing her neck and left ear.
Photos of Adwoa Safo on a bed with blood in the face have been shared on social media.
A photo and video showing bullet holes on the vehicle, a black Toyota Landcruiser with registration number GN 3482 – 24, she was using, have also been shared on social media.

The gunmen reportedly discharged many rounds of ammunition, with one of the bullets said to have grazed her neck and ear.
Another account of the incident also claims that, Adwoa Safo herself also fired a gunshot, and attempted to forcefully enter the premises with her vehicle and banged on the gate several times, before the private security personnel also opened fire. She is said to be the one who fired the first shot.
The police have confirmed the incident happened at Kwabenya and that the Madina Police were investigating the incident.

The deepening leadership crisis within the Kristo Asafo Mission of Ghana took a legal turn last week, as the High Court in Accra was asked to halt a planned installation of Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena as the successor to the late founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo.
On Sunday, a ceremony to introduce the successor to the council of the church was reportedly taking place at the said Kwabenya property where the incident occurred.
Sarah Adwoa Safo, using a black Toyota Landcruiser is said to have attempted to enter the premises, but the gate was locked.
The black vehicle was used to forcefully bang on the gate with the intention of entering.
A member of the church who also doubles as a lawyer for the church, Nana Kofi Kantanka, explained that he has received a brief detail on the incident.

He said it was all about the introduction and installation of a newly appointed leader and per the constitution of the church, the processes for finding a new leader have been triggered based on the constitution of the church with the Council of Elders leading the process.
He said a new leader is to be appointed from the sons of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo, and that the process started some months ago, and they have settled on one person.
“Today, they had wanted to introduce the said person to the General Council of the Church, which represents the members,” he said.
Mr Kofi Kantanka said after the introduction of the newly appointed leader to the members, they heard a “very loud bang at the southern gate of the premises, and then people were surprised. The bang came again, and they realised that it was a car, which was banging at the gate and wanted to forcefully enter.
“So I think there were three bangs, since she couldn’t penetrate with the car, she went to the northern gate and repeated the same thing, and then the security apparatus indicated to her that what she was doing could cause casualties because there were people in the premises. So they [private security men] started firing warning shots to prevent her from entering the premises with the car,” Mr Kantanka said.
Asked why Adwoa Safo was not at the meeting, Mr Kofi Kantanka said she and other family members were all invited, but they did not honour the invitation.
Sources close to Apostle Safo’s family told Graphic Online that the inheritance and family property, in the midst of a “multi-mother family” with different cohorts of children, was what was creating tension in the family, especially with the sharing of property.
This, the sources indicated, had become the bane of family unity, once the Patriarch [Apostle Kwadwo Safo], who was the anchor’s chain, was broken through death.
That is what one of the sources said was being experienced with the Safo family.
Sunday’s incident is said to be solely related to the church, another source insisted, explaining that Apostle Kwadwo Safo left a Will, “so the property bit is settled.”
But added that some family members and church members were not happy with Nana Kwadwo Safo Akofena’s lifestyle and claim it does not sound well for him to lead the church, and among those in support of Akofena not becoming a leader is his sister, Sarah Adwoa Safo.
There are indications that a search at the court has already located the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo’s will, and the lawyers are waiting to take probate to have the will read after his burial and funeral at the end of July 2026.
