NPP Left a Strong Economy; NDC Struggling to Sustain It – Ackom

Mr. Goerge Ackom has asserted that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is currently benefiting from the economic foundation established by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), despite taking credit for recent economic gains.

Speaking on the Wontumi Morning Show hosted by Oheneba Nana Asiedu, Mr. Ackom argued that the NDC had initially attributed the appreciation of the Ghana cedi against the US dollar solely to the efforts of Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson.

“I personally told the NDC that if the NPP handed over power to them, they would mismanage the economy, and that is exactly what we are witnessing today,” Mr. Ackom stated.

According to him, the previous NPP administration handed over a resilient economy that helped stabilize key economic indicators during the transition period. He claimed that the current government is struggling to maintain the measures that previously supported the economy.

Mr. Ackom further alleged that the government had been sterilizing excess liquidity to strengthen the cedi but suggested that current developments indicate those interventions are no longer being effectively sustained.

He also maintained that the NDC is finding it difficult to meet the expectations created by its campaign promises, arguing that the party appears unprepared for the challenges of governing.

“The NPP remains the political party with the best understanding of economic management and governance,” he said.

The former official further claimed that several sectors of the economy, including agriculture, the public sector, and private businesses, are experiencing significant challenges under the current administration.

Citing fuel prices as an example, Mr. Ackom argued that current economic measures are unsustainable.

“Fuel prices have risen to about GH¢15 per litre, compared to approximately GH¢14 per litre during the NPP administration,” he noted.

Mr. Ackom concluded that the prevailing economic conditions highlight the challenges confronting the government and called for what he described as more effective economic management to address the situation.
