Akufo-Addo Wanted Me to Contest Vice Chairman, But I Insisted on Regional Chairman and Won — Wontumi

My Commitment To Service Did Not Begin Today – Wontumi Highlights Track Record

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chairman Wontumi, has drawn parallels between his successful bid for regional chairman and his current ambition to become the party’s National Chairman.

Speaking in an interview with Kwaku Dawuro on Movement TV, Wontumi disclosed that before contesting for the Ashanti Regional Chairmanship, several party figures advised him to seek a lower position instead.

According to him, even former President Nana Akufo-Addo suggested that he contest for First Vice Chairman rather than the top regional position.

“When I decided to contest for the regional chairman position in Ashanti, I was advised to contest for First Vice Chairman instead. Even Akufo-Addo said the same,” he revealed.

Despite the advice, Wontumi said he remained convinced that he was capable of leading the party in the region and therefore refused to step aside.

“I resisted and insisted that I would contest for the regional chairmanship, and I won,” he stated.

The NPP chairman said he sees a similar situation unfolding as he prepares to contest for the party’s national chairmanship.

According to him, some party members are once again suggesting that he should first seek the position of First National Vice Chairman before aiming for the top job.

However, Wontumi insists he will not change his plans.

“So for those saying I should contest First National Vice Chairman, the same way I contested for Regional Chairman and won is the same way I will contest for National Chairman and win,” he declared.

He expressed confidence that his track record, years of service to the party, and grassroots support will carry him to victory when the contest is eventually held.
