The Minority in Parliament has raised concerns over the newly proposed LGBTQ bill currently before government, arguing that the document has undergone significant changes from the original version previously presented to former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for assent.
According to the Minority, the latest version of the bill contains as many as 31 amendments, making it substantially different from the earlier proposal that generated intense national debate.
Speaking on the matter, members of the Minority questioned why government is seeking to push the revised bill through Parliament while presenting it as the same legislation that was earlier considered under the previous administration.
They insist the extensive amendments warrant fresh public scrutiny and broader stakeholder engagement before any attempt is made to pass the bill into law.
The LGBTQ bill remains one of the most controversial pieces of legislation in Ghana, attracting strong opinions from religious groups, civil society organisations, political actors and the international community.
