Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has reminded Members of Parliament that no one is above the law as Parliament continues to engage authorities over the case involving a Ghanaian MP in Holland.
Addressing Parliament on May 21, 2026, in a video shared by The1957News the Speaker said efforts are ongoing through diplomatic channels to ensure justice is served and that the affected MP is treated with dignity and respect under international law.
“The guardians have made it clear in the Constitution that nobody and I repeat, nobody, is above the law. Not even the guardians that we represent. They are not above the law,” he said.
He also appealed to the MP’s family, constituents and the public to remain calm while the matter is being handled.
“Parliament is working with governments to ensure justice is done in this matter. I will, in due course, keep the House updated with developments in the matter,” he said.
Bagbin stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ghana’s mission in Holland have already taken steps regarding the matter.
“So please, keep your cool and leave those who are involved. I’m happy that voluminous information has been given to you as to the steps that have been taken by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, together with our mission in Holland,” he added.
Bagbin further used the opportunity to caution MPs against abusing the authority entrusted to them by the public.
According to him, lawmakers are servants of the people and must always act in ways that uphold public trust and confidence.
He stressed that the Constitution makes it clear that every citizen, including lawmakers, is subject to the law.
“Honourable members, it is very important for us to always remind ourselves that we are here as servants of the people and it is important to keep uppermost in our minds that the power and authority we exercise as Members of Parliament are delegated,” he stated.
“The guardians have made it clear in the Constitution that nobody and I repeat, nobody, is above the law,” Bagbin stated.
