It was a heartbreaking night for Ghana in the men’s 100m final at the African Senior Athletics Championships as Joseph Paul Amoah and Abdul-Rasheed Saminu narrowly missed out on the podium in front of the home crowd in Accra.
After raising hopes with strong semifinal performances earlier in the day, the two Ghanaian sprinters were unable to secure medals in the final at the University of Ghana Stadium on Wednesday night, May 13, 2026.
Joseph Paul Amoah finished fourth in the race, just outside the medal positions, while Abdul-Rasheed Saminu crossed the line in sixth place.
The packed stadium had erupted with excitement before the race as supporters hoped for a memorable Ghanaian podium finish, but it ultimately was not meant to be for the home duo.
Instead, Cameroon’s Emmanuel Eseme once again proved his dominance on Ghanaian soil by storming to gold in the men’s 100m final.
Eseme looked sharp from the start and powered away from the field to secure another major title in Accra, adding to the gold medal he won during the 2023 African Games at the same venue.
His victory further cements his reputation as one of Africa’s top sprinters and a man who clearly enjoys competing in Ghana.
