TGMA 2026 AOTY: Titans Clash As Black Sherif, Wendy Shay, Medikal Others Battle For Victory

The race for the 2026 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) Artiste of the Year is one of the most competitive in recent years.

With six heavyweight names battling for Ghana music’s biggest prize, the category brings together former winners, first-time hopefuls, comeback contenders, and artistes still chasing history.

Here’s a breakdown of this year’s AOTY nominees and their history with the category

Black Sherif <\b>

Black Sherif is one of the youngest artistes to ever win the TGMA Artiste of the Year title.

He won the award in 2023 after a sensational run powered by global hits, sold-out shows and the dominance of his “The Villain I Never Was” era.

The 2026 nomination marks another major moment in his career, proving his consistency at the very top of Ghana’s music scene.

Unlike some of his competitors, Black Sherif has never lost the Artiste of the Year category before. His first nomination ended in victory in 2023.

If he wins again in 2026, Black Sherif would secure his second Artiste of the Year plaque and further cement his place among the modern TGMA greats.

He also remains one of the youngest artistes ever to achieve the feat, joining names like Kidi and Ebony among youthful winners of the category.

Sarkodie <\b>

Sarkodie is the most decorated artiste among the nominees and one of the most successful acts in TGMA history.

The rapper has already won Artiste of the Year twice, first in 2010 and again in 2012.

Beyond his victories, Sarkodie has spent over a decade dominating the category with multiple nominations across different eras of his career. His longevity alone makes his 2026 nomination remarkable, especially considering he remains competitive against artistes from newer generations.

However, Sarkodie has also experienced several losses in the category despite being heavily favoured in some years. His repeated nominations without recent wins have often sparked debates among fans over whether the TGMA has overlooked him in certain seasons.

In terms of overall TGMA success, Sarkodie stands among the all-time leaders with dozens of awards accumulated throughout his career, making him arguably the most awarded artiste in the history of the scheme.

Stonebwoy <\b>

Stonebwoy enters the 2026 race as one of the strongest contenders and is already a two-time official Artiste of the Year winner. He first won in 2015 before reclaiming the crown in 2024.

The dancehall star has become one of the category’s most consistent names over the years, earning several nominations and maintaining relevance across multiple musical eras. His longevity, international reach and fan loyalty continue to keep him firmly in the conversation.

Interestingly, Stonebwoy has publicly insisted that he should be recognised as a three-time winner due to the controversial annulled 2019 edition. Official TGMA records, however, recognise him as a two-time winner because no Artiste of the Year winner was declared in 2019.

Should Stonebwoy triumph again in 2026, he would officially move to three Artiste of the Year wins, placing him among the most successful winners in the history of the category.

Medikal <\b>

For Medikal, the 2026 nomination represents another shot at finally capturing the ultimate TGMA prize. Despite his dominance in rap and hiplife categories over the years, he has never won Artiste of the Year before.

The rapper has previously received nominations in major categories and has built a strong TGMA legacy through hits, collaborations, and rap performances, but the overall top honour has so far eluded him.

This year’s nomination is particularly important because many fans believe Medikal enjoyed one of the strongest commercial years under review. Songs like “Shoulder” and his overall visibility have kept him firmly in the public eye.

A victory in 2026 would mark Medikal’s first-ever Artiste of the Year win and elevate him into the elite class of Ghanaian musicians who have claimed the prestigious award.

Wendy Shay <\b>

Wendy Shay is one of the most interesting names in this year’s lineup because this is her first major breakthrough into the Artiste of the Year category. Despite years of hit records and commercial success, she has never won the award before.

Her nomination is historic in many ways because female artistes have traditionally struggled to dominate the category. Only a few women have ever won the title, including Ebony in 2018 and Diana Hamilton in 2021.

Black Sherif himself recently threw his support behind Wendy Shay, arguing that her contributions during the year under review deserve more recognition in conversations surrounding the award.

If Wendy Shay wins, she would become one of the few female musicians in TGMA history to secure the coveted Artiste of the Year crown.

Diana Hamilton <\b>

Diana Hamilton already made history in 2021 when she became one of the very few gospel artistes to win Artiste of the Year. Her victory followed Joe Mettle’s groundbreaking win in 2017, which opened the doors wider for gospel musicians in the category.

The gospel star’s 2026 nomination proves her continued influence and consistency in the Ghanaian music industry. Unlike some nominees chasing their first crown, Diana Hamilton already knows what it takes to win the biggest award of the night.

Her presence in the category also reflects the growing strength of gospel music within mainstream Ghanaian entertainment. Over the years, the category has gradually evolved from being dominated mostly by hiplife and dancehall acts to embracing a wider range of genres.

A second victory for Diana Hamilton would make her one of the very few gospel musicians to win the award more than once.

The 2026 TGMA Artiste of the Year category ultimately brings together experience, dominance, redemption stories, and history-makers. This year’s race could easily go down as one of the most fiercely contested editions ever.
