2026 BECE Begins Today

The 2026 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) is set to begin nationwide today, May 4, and will run until Monday, May 11, 2026.

According to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), a total of 620,141 candidates from 20,395 schools are expected to sit for the exams, comprising 304,349 boys and 315,792 girls.

The figure represents a 2.7 percent increase compared to the 603,328 candidates recorded in 2025.

To ensure strict supervision, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has mobilised 21,791 vetted invigilators to oversee the examinations across the country.

The Director-General of GES, Prof. Ernest Davis, has assured the public that all logistics have been put in place, adding that the exclusion of compromised officials will help guarantee a fair and transparent process.

GES has also rolled out a nationwide sensitisation campaign across all 16 regions to educate students, parents and teachers on the consequences of examination malpractice.

Meanwhile, the Service has barred all teachers and invigilators linked to malpractice during the 2025 BECE from participating in this year’s exercise.
