“Dumsor Is Hurting Businesses” — Ackom Criticizes NDC Over Unfulfilled Promises

A member of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Ackom, has taken aim at the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing the party of failing to deliver on key promises made to Ghanaians.

According to him, the NDC had pledged to address persistent power outages, introduce a 24-hour economy, and ensure progress on the controversial LGBTQ+ bill—commitments he claims remain largely unfulfilled.

Mr. Ackom made these remarks during an interview with Oheneba Nana Asiedu on the Wontumi Morning Show. In the interview, he contrasted the NDC’s performance with that of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), particularly highlighting the leadership of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He argued that the former president handled the crisis effectively, adding that the outcome might have been worse under former President John Dramani Mahama.

Mr. Ackom also raised concerns about the ongoing power challenges—popularly known as “dumsor”—and their impact on businesses and livelihoods. He warned that unreliable electricity supply is causing many businesses to struggle, with some facing collapse.

Touching on energy sector financing, he questioned the effectiveness of the “legacy debt” levy introduced to help stabilize the sector. According to him, despite contributions from Ghanaians, there has been little noticeable improvement in power supply.

On issues surrounding the Akosombo Dam, Mr. Ackom urged authorities to focus on addressing the root causes of the challenges rather than resorting to dismissals.

“Treating the symptoms without addressing the main issue will not solve the problem,” he said, likening the situation to managing a sore without proper treatment.
