Former Ghanaian footballer, Samuel Osei Kuffuor has said that Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany’s performance is opening doors for black coaches worldwide.
According to him, Kompany’s exploits, winning the 2025/2026 Bundesliga and qualifying for the Champions League semi-final, are remarkable achievements that have caught the attention of top clubs in Europe.
The former Black Stars player asserted that if the Belgian coach continues his impressive performances, it would pave the way for young black coaches, including Michael Essien, to secure opportunities to manage top clubs.
Speaking in an interview with 3Sports, Kuffuor praised Kompany’s achievements and advised other coaches to learn from him so that black coaches can gain greater prominence.
“Vincent Kompany is one of the top young coaches. He has opened so many doors, and he’s young. It’s probably an opportunity for Michael Essien, who is now into coaching, to also have a chance. The door is wide open for black coaches.
“He won the league. He went out last year in the quarter-final against Real Madrid [in the Champions League], and now he is in the semi-final. He is the first black coach to manage in Germany. We now have a black coach leading one of the top clubs in the world,” he said.
Essien is currently serving as an assistant coach at Danish Superliga club Nordsjaelland, as he looks to gain more experience before stepping into a substantive head coaching role.
