2026 WC: Francis Abu Confident Of Making Black Stars Squad Despite Serious Leg Injury

Black Stars midfielder Francis Abu remains confident he will be ready for the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite a serious leg injury suffered last November.

The 24-year-old Right to Dream Academy graduate fractured both bones in his leg during Ghana’s 2–0 defeat to Japan in the Kirin Cup.

Initial reports suggested the injury could sideline him for the World Cup, but Abu insists those assessments were exaggerated. He says his rehabilitation is progressing well and keeps him on course to compete for a national team spot.

Abu visited the Black Stars camp in Stuttgart ahead of Ghana’s friendly against Germany, where he spoke to 3Sports about his recovery and ambitions.

“I am in good spirits. I am on a good path to recovery,” he revealed to 3Sports.

“For sure, especially with where I am now in my recovery. I am now working with the ball alongside my physical trainer and progressing towards team training.”

Recalling the moment of the injury, Abu admitted his memory is vague.

“I don’t remember much of what happened. I just remember asking afterwards how long it would take to recover,” he said.

Despite the setback, Abu made the trip to Stuttgart to personally thank his teammates for their support during his rehabilitation.

“They showed me support during these hard times. I received a lot of text messages and phone calls, and I thought it was important to come and see them, say thank you, and support them in this important game,” he said.

Looking ahead, Abu is determined to complete his recovery and secure a place in Otto Addo’s squad for the World Cup in June and July 2026.
