You Can’t Employ Youth You Can’t Pay — Ackom Raises Concerns Over Ghana’s Economy

A member of the NPP communications team, Mr. Ackom has raised concerns about Ghana’s economic management, citing a reported 6.5% revenue shortfall in 2025 and the government’s inability to meet key fiscal targets.

Speaking on the Wontumi Morning Show hosted by Oheneba Nana Asiedu, he criticized what he described as excessive borrowing, particularly from institutions such as the IMF, arguing that it has not yielded meaningful economic benefits.

“The country often ends up spending more than it gains, making it difficult to manage the economy effectively,” he stated.

He highlighted youth unemployment as one of Ghana’s biggest challenges, warning against government decisions to recruit more workers while struggling to pay existing employees.

“You can’t employ youth you can’t pay,” he stressed, cautioning that such actions could further strain the economy.

Mr. Ackom also urged former President John Dramani Mahama to exercise caution in economic management, noting that governance requires strategic planning, especially within a welfare system where limited resources must be carefully distributed.

Touching on past policies, he defended the controversial E-Levy introduced under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, explaining that it was intended to create jobs and fund infrastructure projects such as road construction.

“It was meant to support job creation and infrastructure development,” he said, adding that opposition to the policy at the time contributed to challenges in meeting revenue targets.

In conclusion, Mr. Ackom emphasized that Ghanaians expect tangible improvements from leadership.

“Ghanaians voted for change and expect results. Government must reduce excessive spending and focus on addressing critical issues like unemployment,” he concluded.
