“Economic Performance Is Poor” — Ishaq Criticizes Rising Cost of Living Under Mahama

Political commentator, Mr. Ishaq, has raised concerns over Ghana’s rising cost of living, urging the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to exercise prudence in governance.

Speaking on the Wontumi Morning Show hosted by Oheneba Nana Asiedu, Mr. Ishaq described the country’s current economic performance under President John Dramani Mahama as “poor,” and called for immediate corrective measures.

“No wonder the late former President Jerry John Rawlings warned that some NDC members have ‘sharp baby teeth.’ We are now witnessing it in their actions,” he stated.

Mr. Ishaq also questioned President Mahama’s international leadership credentials, arguing that his governance record does not reflect the standards expected of individuals seeking roles within regional and continental bodies such as ECOWAS and the African Union.

He further criticized what he described as inconsistencies in the government’s economic narrative. According to him, earlier claims by President Mahama that global conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war would not significantly impact Ghana’s economy contrast sharply with recent statements attributing economic difficulties to tensions involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.

On the domestic front, Mr. Ishaq expressed concern about the increasing cost of living, particularly in the education sector. He pointed to rising university admission fees and hostel charges, which he said are placing a heavy burden on students and their families.

He also alleged disparities in government decision-making, noting that while public officials’ salaries have been increased, ordinary Ghanaians continue to struggle with inflation and economic hardship.

Mr. Ishaq urged the government to adopt policies that will ease economic pressures and restore public confidence.
