About 100 participants are partaking in the public lecture on Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) at the University of Cabo Verde (Uni-CV), Praia, Cabo Verde.
To be held by the Inter-Governmental Group of Action against Money Laundering in West Africa (GIABA), the lecture would be the fifth in the series of public lectures on AML/CFT held by the group, following previous editions held at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria Nigeria (2011), Université Félix Houphouët-Boigny, Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire (2014), University of Benin, Benin (2017) and the Nile University, Abuja, Nigeria in 2021.

GIABA indicated that it had identified the ivory towers as a veritable platform to reach a large community of well-informed people towards achieving a crime-free society.
As such, it said the lectures formed part of sustained efforts aimed at raising awareness against the scourges of economic and financial crimes, particularly money laundering and terrorist financing,
“The event seeks to sensitise members of the academic community at The University of Cabo Verde on the phenomena of money laundering and terrorist financing in the West African sub-region,” the statement said.
“And will feature paper presentations entitled ‘Global Threat of Transnational Organised Crime: A Challenge to West African Region and Role of the Youths.’ The papers will be delivered by MrsAlmadaFernandesKyllySamhaa,” the statement added.
It stated that dignitaries expected at the event included the Minister of Justice, Dr Joana Rosa Gomes Amado; Minister of Education, Dr Amadeu Cruz and the Director General of GIABA, Mr Edward W. Harris.
The Rector of the University of Cabo Verde, Dr. José Arlindo Barreto and the Director of the Cabo Verde Financial Intelligence Unit, AntonioSebastião, would also be there.
“Also at the event, GIABA’s faculty will deliver presentations titled ‘An Overview of AML/CFT Framework in West Africa: The Role of GIABA as a Regional Initiative and GIABA Establishment: Mission, vision, mandate, achievements and challenges,” the statement added.
GIABA used the opportunity to reiterate its commitment to sensitising and working with all stakeholders to rid the region of the menace of money laundering and terrorist financing.
