2026 WC: Lower Your Expectations – Ex-GFA Veep Tells Ghanaians

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President and ex-Black Stars Management Committee Chairman, George Afriyie, has urged Ghanaian fans to moderate their expectations ahead of the country’s 2026 World Cup campaign.

The four-time African champions are set to make their fifth appearance at football’s biggest stage, where they will face Panama, England, and Croatia in the group stage.

As part of preparations, the GFA has strengthened the Black Stars’ technical team with five new appointments. However, Afriyie cautioned that expanding the backroom staff does not automatically guarantee success on the pitch.

“Ghanaians should temper their expectations for the Black Stars at the World Cup,” he told Asempa FM.

“Having more hands on board doesn’t automatically improve the team’s prospects,” he added.

The revamped technical team includes French coach Alain Ravera and Black Queens manager Kim Lars Björkegren as assistant coaches.

Spanish tactician Jose Daniel Martinez Alfonso has been tasked with strengthening scouting and match analysis, while Carlos Lozano Romero returns as physiotherapist after serving with the squad at the 2022 World Cup. British-born Ghanaian performance coach Dwayne Peasah Paa Kwesi completes the setup.

The Black Stars are expected to regroup in March for international friendlies against Austria and Germany as part of their build-up to the tournament, which will be staged in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, face England on June 23, and conclude the group stage against Croatia on June 27.
