Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on the Mahama administration to prioritise the completion and operationalisation of the Agenda 111 hospital projects initiated under his tenure.
He made the appeal during the launch of the centenary celebrations of the Kyebi Government Hospital, where he stressed that access to quality healthcare must not be subjected to partisan politics.
According to him, bringing the Agenda 111 facilities into full operation would significantly strengthen healthcare delivery across the country.
The Agenda 111 initiative was designed to construct 111 hospitals nationwide to bridge gaps in access to medical care, particularly in underserved areas.
The centenary launch, organized by the Akyem Kyebi Government Hospital Authority in collaboration with the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council, also served as a fundraising platform to support infrastructure development at the facility.
Speaking at the event, the former President reiterated the importance of continuity in national development projects, urging authorities to ensure that the hospitals are not left uncompleted.
Meanwhile, the Medical Superintendent of the facility, Dr. Isaac Adu-Opoku Antwi, highlighted several challenges facing the hospital despite its 100-year history. He noted the absence of key infrastructure, including a maternity block, a children’s ward, a physiotherapy unit, and residential accommodation for staff.
He expressed concern about the strain on existing facilities, revealing that children currently share wards with pregnant women, a situation he said compromises the quality of care. Plans are therefore underway to construct new wards as part of the hospital’s centenary legacy projects.
Also addressing the gathering, Osagyefuo Amoatia Ofori Panin called for a comprehensive upgrade of the hospital. He appealed to stakeholders to support efforts aimed at improving healthcare services in the area, noting that the facility requires urgent modernization to meet current demands.
The Agenda 111 initiative, was a flagship programme by the Akufo-Addo led New Patriotic Party (NPP) government aimed at constructing 111 hospitals to improve healthcare access nationwide but has been under public scrutiny over delays.
